Social – Berlin – Disabled people can hope for more money for assistants – Economy

Berlin (dpa / bb) – People with severe disabilities in Berlin can hope for better pay for personal assistants that they hired themselves according to the so-called employer model. “These assistants have been paid less than those employed by assistance services since 2019, but now it looks like things are moving,” said Stephen Willaredt, chair of the Association of Employers with Personal Assistance (AAPA), am Monday of the German Press Agency. AAPA has been campaigning for better pay since 2020.

The main committee of the House of Representatives spoke out in favor of spending one million euros this year and next for better pay for personal assistants who are employed via the employer model, said the chairwoman of the committee, Franziska Becker (SPD), after a meeting on June 8th on their website. The plenum will decide on June 23.

In Berlin, people with severe physical disabilities can take care of a personal assistant. 263 people are currently doing this through a nursing service, according to the social administration in response to a parliamentary question by Catrin Wahlen (Greens). 155 people have hired an assistant themselves in the so-called employer model (AGM). Both sides can act more independently and flexibly.

However, while the employees of nursing services are paid according to pay group 5 of the collective agreement of the federal states (TV-L), assistants in the employer model receive payment according to group 3 and thus around 200 euros less per month.

“It’s very, very good for the employment relationship that it is now financially equal to the big providers. That’s incredibly positive,” said Catrin Wahlen. According to their information, however, only around 400,000 euros and not one million euros are additionally required per year. This question still needs to be clarified.

According to the administration, personal assistance in the employer model costs an average of around 14,200 euros per month. For assistants who are employed by a service, the average monthly cost is 16,300 euros. Overall, the costs for personal assistance in Berlin last year amounted to around 6.5 million euros per month.
