Sad Friday for Czechoslovak football, the champion from Belgrade died

Pollák only watched the final against the Federal Republic of Germany, which was decided by a memorable penalty by Antonín Panenka, from the stands, as he red carded a red card in the semifinal against the Netherlands in the 80th minute.

Pollák belonged to a great generation of Czechoslovak footballers. The midfielder, nicknamed “Bobby”, played most of his career in Košice, spent two years in Sparta and Banská Bystrica and played for three years in Salzburg, Austria.

In the international field, a native of the village of Medzev in the Košice district, he had two great successes. In addition to the aforementioned triumph in Belgrade, he took bronze in Italy four years later.

In 1971, he finished third in the poll for the best football player in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. At the club level, he won the Slovak Cup with Košice and the Czechoslovak Cup with Sparta.

After finishing his active career, he worked as a sports director at Letná and also served as vice president in Košice. In addition to football, he also studied, and obtained a degree at the Faculty of Law at Charles University.
