Russian vaccine Sputnik V packaging tests begin in Mexico

The Government of Mexico, through the Biological and Reagent Laboratories of Mexico (Birmex), started the pilot test of packing of the Russian vaccine Sputnik V against COVID-19.

The batch packed in Birmex will be sent to Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology, to get your validation and start mass packaging.

The pilot test consists of a vial filling process, where the special conditions for packaging the vaccine are recreated, which is verified and approved by the Gamaleya National Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology Research.

On June 29, 10 liters of active substance of the first component arrived in our country, which were distributed in three batches, each with a theoretical yield of 1,111 vials with 5 doses each, to make a theoretical total of 16,665 doses. ; From each batch, 326 vials will be sent as proof of quality of the Birmex packaging to the Gamaleya Institute.

With this pilot batch, Mexico would become the first country in North America and the second in the entire continent, to register Sputnik V fulfilling the first step of the process to achieve technology transfer with the objective that Birmex, in a strategic alliance with other Mexican laboratories, carry out the mass production of the Russian vaccine in Mexico.

On the other hand, this Monday, the Government of Mexico received 10 more liters of active substance of the second component to continue with the pilot test of the vacuna Sputnik V. Once approved, the two components of this biological can be packaged in the country.

The body chaired by Pedro Zenteno Santaella, signed an agreement with the Russian Direct Investment Fund to be the legal representative in Mexico, carry out the procedure and bring Sputnik V to the country, which is used to vaccinate the population against COVID-19 since last February.

Once Sputnik V comply with the corresponding regulations and begin packaging in Mexico, a process that is expected to begin at the end of July, there will be three vaccines packaged in national territory, adding to AstraZeneca and Cansino.

The Secretary of Foreign Relations, Marcelo Ebrard, stressed that the increase in the number of doses that our country has had in recent months, is mainly due to the strategy dictated by the President of the Republic.

Thanks to this, the path was drawn to increase and strengthen national capacities and establish contact with foreign entities to package the active substance in national territory.

What we are going to have is that the supply in Mexico will be the result of agreements to pack nationally



In this sense, the secretary made reference to the deliveries of vaccines by the Drugmex plant, in Querétaro; Y Liomont Laboratories, in Ocoyoacac, State of Mexico. He also announced that the Parastatal company Birmex has already started the first tests of the Russian vaccine packaging Sputnik V, which will increase the supply of various developments in our country.

Therefore, Foreign Minister Ebrard stressed that of the total doses that will be added to the National Vaccination Plan during the month of July, about half will be packaged in Mexico: nine million of the AstraZeneca vaccine and one million of CanSino. This, in parallel with the arrival of finished vaccines from the development of Sinovac y Pfizer.
