Russian President Putin Signals Openness to Ceasefire in Ukraine War, Sources Say

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signaled that he is open to a ceasefire that would halt the fighting where the war currently stands. This is reported by two sources close to the Kremlin The New York Times.

The information must have been given diplomatically through back channels.

– They say they are ready to negotiate a ceasefire, says a senior international official anonymously to The New York Times.

The Russian proposal is said to be that the front lines that stand today become permanent and that Russian-occupied areas become part of Russia.

The sources tell the newspaper that Putin is ready to move on in life.

– He is willing to stop in the current position of the war. He is not willing to retreat one meter, says a former Russian officer.

Ukraine has previously said that a cease-fire is not appropriate until all of today’s Russian-occupied areas have been released.

Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, tells the newspaper that the information they present is not correct.

When asked if Russia is ready for a ceasefire on the current front line, he points to the president’s recent statement that his goals for the war have not changed.

When Putin spoke to his generals on Tuesday this week, he said that Russia’s war aims have not changed. The Russian president boasted that Ukraine is now so besieged that Russian troops can “do whatever they want”.

– We do not give up what is ours. If they want to negotiate, let them negotiate, Putin said.

20 percent of Ukraine is now occupied by Russian forces.

Tormod Heier, professor of military strategy and operations, told Dagbladet yesterday that Ukraine has 800,000 soldiers, while Russia has 600,000 soldiers.
