Russian Peacekeepers Begin Withdrawal from Nagorno-Karabakh: Latest Updates

The process of withdrawing Russian peacekeepers from Nagorno-Karabakh has begun. This information was confirmed by the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov.

“Yes, this is true,” Peskov said in response to a relevant question at the daily press conference. He did not provide details.

At the beginning of the withdrawal of the peacekeepers on April 16 write some Azerbaijani media. According to them, the process has been going on for several days.

A Russian peacekeeping force was deployed in Nagorno-Karabakh after the conflict escalated in the fall of 2020. An agreement on this was reached during talks between the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia. It was originally intended that the group would be established for five years.

The contingent number is around two thousand people. Over three and a half years, seven peacekeepers died in Nagorno-Karabakh. Five of them, including the group’s deputy head, Ivan Kovgan, were killed as a result of Azerbaijani shelling on September 20, 2023; Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev formally apologized to Russia for what happened and promised to punish those responsible (the progress of the additional investigation was not reported).

Most of the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, which under international law is part of Azerbaijan, has been controlled for decades by the self-proclaimed Republic of Artakh, which opposed Armenia. On 19 September 2023, Azerbaijan took full control of the region during a one-day operation. After this, tens of thousands of Armenians who lived in the area left within a few days.
