Russian Olympic Committee Is Surprised At Pressure On Tokyo 2020 IOC | NOW

The Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) on Monday questioned the way in which the organizers of the Olympic Games are being pressured by a number of countries. Many sports federations around the world want the four-yearly event to be postponed due to the corona virus.

“We find the attempts to pressure organizers to make hasty decisions unacceptable,” the ROC said in a statement. “The worst thing that can happen now is that panic breaks out. That is why we call on all concerned to remain calm.”

The United States’ Swimming and Athletics Association, among others, and several Olympic committees have requested the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to postpone the Games. Canada even announced that it would not send athletes to Tokyo at all if the Games continue as usual next summer.

Partly due to this increased pressure, the IOC announced on Sunday that it will provide a decision within four weeks. Even the Japanese authorities, who have long been confident that the Games could continue as usual next summer, now recognize that postponement is a serious option.

“No doubt about good decision of IOC”

The Russians trust the IOC to make the right decision. “For us, the health of the athletes and the importance of equal opportunities are paramount. We also have daily contact with the IOC. We have no doubts that they are well informed and make an informed decision.”

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, many Olympic qualifying tournaments have been postponed and many sports facilities have been closed, preventing athletes from properly preparing. Previously, the European Football Championship and Roland Garros were moved.

The coronavirus in short

  • The coronavirus mainly spreads through sneezes and cough drops. The virus can be transmitted directly from person to person or (for a limited time) through surfaces such as door handles.
  • You can considerably reduce the chance of spreading by keeping at least 1.5 meters away from others.
  • An infected person infects two to three others on average. Precautions are necessary to contain this.
  • The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
  • Almost all deaths involve the elderly or other vulnerable persons, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
