The US has imposed sanctions on the disinformation site “SouthFront”. The site also actively advertises to German-speaking readers. Security politicians accuse the German government of not taking action against such threats consistently enough.

Whe is insecure and easy to manipulate. This can pose a serious threat to democracies, especially when important elections are coming up. Because of this, election campaigns are also a worthwhile target for those behind disinformation campaigns.

The US is now cracking down on such actors. This week the US Treasury Department Sanctions against 16 organizations and 16 people who are said to have tried in the interests of the Russian government to influence the 2020 US presidential elections.

Russia used “a system of government officials, disinformation agencies and companies” to “covertly influence” US voters and spread false information about “political candidates and electoral processes and institutions”.

The sanctions are also directed against websites that, according to the US Treasury Department, are operated by Russian intelligence agencies. This also includes the “SouthFront” website, which WELT AM SONNTAG reported in detail at the beginning of April.

Research by the editorial team had shown that the traces of the disinformation site lead to Russia and how the makers of the site are specifically looking for volunteers who should translate articles into German.

Fake news sites like “SouthFront” are important channels with which foreign states try to influence the opinion in western countries – and Germany is their destination particularly often: An evaluation by the EU from mid-March According to reports, more than 700 cases have been reported since 2015 in which Germany was targeted by targeted disinformation campaigns, mainly from Russia. In France, which occupies second place, there were only a good 300. With a view to the general election this year, the number will probably continue to increase.

“Germany must prepare better”

According to Konstantin Kuhle, domestic policy spokesman for the FDP, cases like “SouthFront” show how far the network of Russian disinformation extends into Germany. The openness of the liberal constitutional order with freedom of expression and freedom of the media is used specifically to destabilize it. “Neither the German security authorities nor German foreign policy are sufficiently aware of this threat.”

Against the background of the federal election in six months’ time, Germany should better prepare itself against the fact that democracy is being undermined from within because people long for authoritarian leadership models. Kuhle suggests that a federal government task force could coordinate the efforts of various actors – for example the intelligence services and the Federal Foreign Office – in order to better protect Germany.

The deputy chairman of the Greens parliamentary group and deputy chairman of the parliamentary control body, Konstantin von Notz, also criticized the Federal Republic’s actions. While other countries are promoting the investigation of such interference and taking the danger of interference coordinated by the secret service very seriously, the federal government has not yet recognized the extent of the threat. “For years we have been pointing out the problems at the very top, both to the Chancellor and her Chancellery Minister and in the responsible bodies.”

While other states acted resolutely, expelled diplomats, put sites like “SouthFront” and their backers on sanction lists and improved the security authorities, the federal government is doing “practically nothing to this day”. “The refusal to adequately deal with new threats has meanwhile become a massive security policy problem, for which the Federal Minister of the Interior Seehofer is primarily responsible”.

The person responsible for digitization in the Chancellery Minister of State, Dorothee Bär, initiated a federal agency for digital education last year. Upon request, however, it said from her office that she could not comment at the moment due to scheduling reasons.
