Russia Threatens Europe with Intermediate-Range Nuclear Missiles

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Russia planning to direct missiles nuclear medium distance to countries Europe West.

The statement was made by the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Ryabkov, regarding tensions with Western European countries over Ukraine in the Black Sea region.

Ryabkov said Russia would be forced to act if Western Europe refused to join the European medium-range nuclear missile (INF) moratorium. The moratorium is part of efforts to ease tensions in Ukraine.

He stressed that the stagnation of a political and diplomatic solution would make Russia respond by means of military technology.

“Meaning, this will be a confrontation, this will be the next round,” Ryabkov said, referring to the potential deployment of missiles by Russia.

Medium-range nuclear missiles with a range of 500 to 5,500 kilometers were banned in Europe under a 1987 agreement between the United States and the Soviet Union at the time. The agreement was signed by the country’s leaders at the time, Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev and US President Ronald Reagan.

The agreement was reached to ease Cold War tensions between the two countries.

The US later withdrew from the pact in 2019 after protests by Russia’s maneuvering of a cruise missile called the 9M729. NATO dubbed the missile as a screwdriver.

If NATO’s accusations are true, Russia’s threat to prepare medium-range nuclear missiles for Europe is called far-fetched because the country has indeed prepared nuclear missiles.

But according to Russia observer from the University of Innsbruk, Gerhard Mangot, if NATO’s accusations are wrong, the threat is the last warning for NATO.

“If NATO sticks with its stance of not wanting to negotiate on the deal, we will see Russia deploying ‘Screwdriver’ missiles on the borders of Western Europe,” Mangot told reporters. Reuters.
