Russia: Stabilization in Kabul WATCH

Following the fall of the Afghan capital into the hands of Taliban militants, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday that the situation in Kabul was “stabilizing” and that the rebels had begun to “restore public order”.

Russia, whose ambassador is scheduled to meet with Taliban on Tuesday, said militants had “guaranteed security for the local population” despite thousands of Afghans trying to leave the country in a hurry.

In a statement, Moscow stated that it had “established working contacts with the new authorities”.

Moscow had previously announced that the Russian ambassador to Kabul would meet with Taliban representatives on Tuesday.

Unlike Western countries in a hurry to evacuate their diplomats from a Taliban-controlled country, Russia has announced that its embassy in Kabul will continue to operate.

Ambassador Dmitry Zhirov has told the Russian media that the Taliban have already started guarding his embassy.

Zamir Kabulov, a spokesman for Russia’s foreign ministry, said on Monday that Moscow would decide on recognizing the Taliban government “on the basis of the behavior of the new authorities”.

In recent years, the Kremlin has tried to maintain contact with the Taliban and has repeatedly hosted representatives of Islamist insurgents in Moscow. The last such meeting took place in July.

It has already been reported that with the withdrawal of the US and other foreign military contingents from Afghanistan, the Taliban launched a general offensive operation this month, capturing virtually the entire territory in a short time, but Kabul fell on Sunday.-

Afghanistan’s current president, Ashraf Gani, left the country on Sunday.
