（ＣＮＮ） Russia’s Federal Investigative Commission, which is in charge of serious crimes, made the decision by Wednesday after the International Criminal Court (ICC) earlier issued arrest warrants for Putin and others on suspicion of war crimes related to the invasion of Ukraine. It has announced that it will soon include four ICC judges who are said to have been actively involved in Russia’s wanted list.
The Russian state-run RIA-Novosti news agency reported, citing the chairman of the commission, Aleksandr Bastrykin. He attended an international forum on legal issues held in St. Petersburg, Russia, and made a statement.
On March 17, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Putin on charges of participating in a war crime of illegally taking Ukrainian children into Russia. An arrest warrant was also issued for the country’s presidential plenipotentiary representative in charge of child rights issues, Libowa Belova, on similar charges.
In response to the ICC’s decision, the Russian Federation Investigative Committee also revealed that it had promptly launched a criminal investigation against the four judges. The Russian president’s office also criticized the decision, calling it an “outrageous and unacceptable decision.”
However, Russia is not a member of the ICC. In principle, the ICC does not allow a trial in absentia without Putin appearing in court, and the possibility of holding a trial would only arise if the person subject to an arrest warrant is handed over by Russia or if he is detained overseas while visiting.
