EU, committed to labor rights and justice in North America: Salazar

Mexico City. The United States ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, noted that his country is committed to workers’ rights and labor justice in North America. “Within the framework of the USMCA, we have historically collaborated with the Government of Mexico to promote an agenda that puts the well-being of workers at the center.”

On the occasion of International Labor Day, he noted that they recognize the efforts of the Mexican authorities to consolidate a new labor paradigm. “Today marks five years of the 2019 labor reform implemented by Mexico in the face of the T-MEC, which reflects its commitment to strengthening union democracy and promoting authentic and fair collective relations, being one of the most crucial labor changes in decades “.

He indicated that the United States Department of Labor has allocated more than 200 million dollars to collaborate and provide technical advice to Mexican labor authorities, the private sector, unions, workers and civil society to advance the labor commitments of the T -MEC and labor reform.

He highlighted, among others, the Quick Response Labor Mechanism of the T-MEC, which he stated has been an unprecedented tool that has benefited more than 30,000 workers in Mexico directly and more than five million dollars in lost wages and benefits were secured. labor.

“Our governments have collaborated to remedy violations of labor and union rights, and workers now have better wages and democratic union representation.”

He added that through the H-2A Workers Wage Recovery Program, more than 13,000 Mexican migrant workers will be able to receive $6.5 million in back wages, money that, he noted, they earned with the sweat of their brow in the United States.

“The Guides for Conducting Labor Hearings are part of the tools that we develop together to promote transparency and union democracy, as well as an effective administration of labor justice.”

But not only that, he said that the Labor Information Repository was created in Mexico, a unique historical tool in the world, which makes all union life transparent and makes it accessible to workers, who now have access to union democracy documents. and collective contracts.

“Greater gender equality and access to leadership positions. We collaborate with Mexican authorities, women, labor and business organizations to increase the number of women in union leadership positions and strengthen gender protections and avoid discrimination. We collaborate with Mexico to eradicate child and forced labor, including a system to prohibit the importation of goods produced with forced labor.”

“Actions to protect migrant workers and prevent undocumented migration through the Memorandum of Understanding Regarding Labor Mobility and the Protection of Temporary Foreign Workers and the launch of TrabajoMigrante.gov”

He said that while “we have made important achievements, we still have work to do to achieve better wages and conditions for workers across North America.”
