Russia accuses EU of “shaping” situation in Kosovo to provoke current tensions – Ferplei

MADRID, 11 (PRESS EUROPE)

The Russian government this Sunday accused the European Union (EU) of “shaping” the situation in Kosovo for years to cause the situation to worsen, amid heightened tensions that led Serbia to demand its military deployment and police in the area.

The spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zajarova, has collected some statements by the Serbian premier, Ana Brnabic, in which she warns that she is “on the brink of war” due to the actions of Kosovo and the “inaction” of the Union European.

In this sense, Zajarova highlighted through a short message on her Telegram account that “this situation is precisely the one that the EU has been shaping for years”.

For his part, the president of the Serbian parliament, Vladimir Orlic, underlined that Belgrade “will protect peace and stability, but also the security of the Serbs in Kosovo”. “You have to act wisely, with a cool head and steadfastly despite all the pressure,” he said.

Thus, Orlic denounced that the Kosovar Serb population lives in a state of “terror” whose aim is to expel them from the area, while noting that the “pressure” on Serbia will increase in the coming days, according to the Serbian agency. from the news of Tanjug.

Serbian President, Aleksandar Vucic, announced on Saturday that he would ask NATO to deploy the Serbian army and police in Kosovo amid a resurgence of tensions at border crossings with Serbia and a new outbreak in the dispute that has separated Belgrade and Pristina since the declaration of independence of Kosovo in 2008.

The request, which is unprecedented since the end of the Kosovo war more than 20 years ago, came hours after the announcement of the postponement of local elections in Serb-majority areas of northern Kosovo and the erection of Kosovo Serb barricades . led to the intervention of the Kosovar police at the border.

Faced with the impossibility of reaching an agreement on the so-called “license plate crisis”, a long series of clashes between the Serbian and Kosovan authorities over car registration plates, issued by Serbia, and of which Kosovo intended to take over until an agreement was reached at the end November through EU mediation–, mayors, judges and Serbian-Kosovar policemen have decided to resign from their functions and to open an institutional vacuum in the area.

On 15 November, the Kosovo Srpska Lista (Serbian List) party declared its total and complete withdrawal from the local elections, which included the election of the mayors of four municipalities with a Serb majority: Northern Mitrovica, Zubin Potok, Leposavic and Zvecan. governed by mayors of this formation, who had resigned five days earlier.

After several nights of violent incidents that left at least one Kosovo policeman injured by alleged Serb gunfire, the situation ended up worsening with the arrest of one Kosovo Serb policeman, part of the discharged officers, leading to the erection of barricades by the population of the area.
