Rus qualifies for the main tournament Cincinnati | after a nice comeback NOW

Arantxa Rus has qualified for the main schedule of the Cincinnati WTA tournament. The Dutch also won her second qualifying game in New York on Friday-evening, where the Western & Southern Open will be held once.

The 29-year-old Russian, who was too strong for Stefanie Vögele in the first qualifying round, counted on Flushing Meadows in two sets with Nina Stojanovic: 6-4 and 6-3. The Serbian occupies the 88th place on the WTA ranking and is therefore sixteen places lower on the world ranking than the native Delft.

By the way, Rus started dramatically in the final game of the qualifying tournament by losing the first four games. It turned out to be a wake-up call, as Rus then placed three breaks and still won the first set. In the second company it went even longer, but Rus made the difference with a break at 4-3.

For Rus, the Western & Southern Open is her third tournament since the resumption of the season after the corona crisis. At the beginning of this month she participated in the clay tournament of Palermo (first round end station) and last week she played in Prague (second round eliminated).

At the end of this month, Rus will be present at the US Open, for which she has been placed directly for thanks to her ranking. She is the only Dutch in the singles of the Grand Slam tournament, which is less strong than usual due to the corona pandemic, especially among women.

Kiki Bertens, world ranking leader Ashleigh Barty, Simona Halep, Elina Svitolina and title defender Bianca Andreescu, among others, are not present. The US open opens on August 31, three days after the Western & Southern Open final.
