The Rural Society del Oeste complained about the high cost of the vaccine foot and mouth in Mendoza, which is almost double that in other parts of the country. For this reason, they asked the director of the SenasaDiana Guillén, to create an entity to administer the vaccination campaign and avoid the cost of intermediation of Coprosamen, due to its high value.
In Mendoza, the foot-and-mouth disease vaccine is the most expensive in the country and costs $648 per dose, while in other provinces it is around $350. It must be taken into account that this value is determined both by the number of existing heads and by the entities in charge of placing the vaccine.
Claudio Álvarez Danier, from the Paraná Entre Ríos Foundation to Fight Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FUCOFA), explained that in the country there are more than 300 health entities that vaccinate against foot-and-mouth disease; each with a differential price.
In your province, the value of this vaccine is $360 because there is an entity that covers both Ríos and Corrientes, which involved 4,600,000 doses in this campaign. In Mendoza, on the other hand, according to information from the Western Livestock Chamber, the livestock sector produces 400,000 head of cattle.
“The farmers expressed their interest in creating another sanitary entity in the province of Mendoza, and for that I suggested that they present to the Mendoza COPROSA the intention of creating an entity for a specific geographical area. This is very feasible, as is already the case in other provinces. In the province of Buenos Aires, for example, there are more than a hundred,” said Guillén.
Vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease is carried out every year and a half in general terms and is one of the most important for the livestock sector, due to the damage that this disease can cause in cows.
But, in addition, it has a significant economic impact, because the main importing markets for Argentine meat, such as the European Union or Japan, and even Brazil and the United States, reject cuts from countries or regions where outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease are detected, therefore that vaccination is key to keeping foreign markets open, which today generates almost US$3.3 billion in exports a year.
The Rural Society of Western Argentina seeks to implement a Strategic Plan for the Cattle raising because “Mendoza has great potential to increase the number of heads in the provincial dryland” and the possibility of diversifying the production offered by the activity.
