Rural Municipality of Wyhl Declines Participation in Frelo Bike Rental System Tender: Doubts About Benefit and Consideration for Entry Later

The municipality of Wyhl is currently not interested in taking part in the tender for the “Frelo” bicycle rental system. The benefit is questionable and entry later is still possible.

At its most recent public meeting, the local council agreed in principle that the municipality of Wyhl would not take part in the tender for the bicycle rental system. “The benefit for the population in rural areas is questionable,” said Mayor Ferdinand Burger; the local council shared his skepticism. The municipality would have to spend between 7,000 and 8,000 euros annually for the system with a term of around five years.

Doubts about the usefulness of the system in rural areas

The mayor further argued that he did not want to commit himself to these costs for five years. In Wyhl everyone probably has a bike at home. There is also no empirical data regarding loan systems for rural areas. Dietmar Schwrer pointed out that faster public transport connections, for example to Freiburg, would bring greater benefit to the community. Sven Hagenunger pointed out that the bikes would then be left somewhere after the rental: “There is no mutual exchange.”

The community could also join in later

The bicycle rental system was successfully introduced in Freiburg. If there was a new call for tenders, it would now be possible to also include the districts of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald and Emmendingen. Three normal bicycles and two pedelecs would be planned for the community of Wyhl; The rental station would therefore also have to be equipped with a power supply. If such a system were to become established in the area, the municipality could join in at a later date, the administration emphasized.
