RTL is waiting to broadcast the program Joling and the Foreigners. Content director Peter van der Vorst took the decision in response to “several negative reactions”, reports RTL Boulevard Wednesday.
In the program Gerard Joling, who in the past has often been critical of the multicultural society, would visit people from other cultures.
However, according to RTL, the zeitgeist has changed to such an extent that such a program does not fit in sufficiently. The channel group says that it has taken note of the negative reactions. “We understand them and are happy with them. It adds to the knowledge we have and accumulate every day about stereotyping and imaging. We actively keep that knowledge up to date by conducting a lot of research ourselves and talking to experts.”
RTL is going to find out how the program can be broadcast in a different form in the future. “Because we all want this program to bring understanding and connection. The program will be renamed and we look critically at the material that has already been played and what is still being played.” RTL expects to be able to add the updated version to the schedule in 2021.
Although the program was not yet shown on television, there was already a lot of fuss about it. For example, there was criticism of the production team that was looking for Moroccan-Dutch women via Facebook who could influence Joling’s ideas about Moroccans. TV reviewer Emma Curvers of de Volkskrant wrote in response to the negative comments a column.
