Roommates Charged with Abusing Corpse to Withdraw Money from Deceased Man’s Bank, Police Say

Roommates Charged with Abusing Corpse after Withdrawing Money from Deceased Man’s Bank Account

Roommates Prop Up Deceased Man’s Body

Two roommates of a recently deceased man have been charged with abusing a corpse after they propped up his body to withdraw money from his bank account, according to local police. Loreen B. Feralo, 55, and Karen Kasbohm, 63, discovered the man dead on Monday. They then proceeded to transport his body to a bank, where they had previously been with him, the Ashtabula Police Department reported.

Macabre Scheme Unfolds at the Bank

With the assistance of a third, unidentified person, the roommates positioned the deceased man’s body in the front seat of his car to make it visible to bank staff. They then drove to the nearby bank branch in Ashtabula, Ohio, where they successfully withdrew an undisclosed amount of money. As per the police chief, they had previously conducted withdrawals from the man’s account with his permission and presence.

Failed Attempt at the Hospital

Following the bizarre withdrawal, the alleged perpetrators dropped off the dead man’s body at the Ashtabula County Medical Center. However, they quickly left without providing any information about the deceased individual, creating suspicion among the hospital staff. Working diligently to solve the mystery, the police chief revealed that one of the roommates later called the hospital and shared certain details about the man, leading to his identification as Douglas Layman, 80.

Arrest and Proceedings

Subsequently, the Ashtabula Police Department arrived at Layman’s residence, where the roommates disclosed the events that unfolded at the bank. The two suspects have appeared in court. Details about whether they entered pleas or obtained legal representation remain unclear as of now. Requests for commentary from the county public defender’s office have not yet received a response. Additional charges may be forthcoming, according to the police chief. The county prosecutor’s office, however, could not be reached for comment.
