After canceling the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Rooftop Cinema Club is back with a full lineup of classic and favorite movies, all screened in a fun, outdoor setting.
Movies like The Princess Bride Y Pulp Fiction will be screened on the rooftop of the Manchester Grand Hyatt in downtown San Diego.
This year, the space grew to guarantee adequate social distancing. Attendees are invited to arrive early to enjoy city views, play games, take photos, and order a cocktail. They can also order food, and the menu includes boards of cold cuts, pretzels, nachos and, of course, typical products in the cinema such as popcorn and candies.
Some screenings include interactive elements, such as costume or singing contests. Although most screenings are limited to people over 18 years of age, some special films for families are also on offer this year.
Rooftop Cinema Club was founded in London in 2011 by Gerry Cottle Jr. who said he started the company to combine his love of film and his love of events. I wanted a place where I could enjoy classic movies on a big screen while having a beer or cocktail and being with friends.
“Things like Top Gun, Back to the Future, all those kinds of movies … I was born in ’81, so I was about 6 years old when those movies were released in theaters. I couldn’t see them at the movies. It’s one thing to see them at home, but to see them on the big screen … that’s how it started, “he said.
