On Wednesday, July 8, the people of Latgale suburbs went to see the future visions of landscape architects. In a similar event the day before, the ideas were presented to the residents of Sarkandaugava and Zolitūde. Residents involved in the consultation often drag the flight of architects back to the ground.

In the future park of Zolitūde, there will be romantic canopies, a children’s playground and a walking path between the 12-storey houses. A new path and lighting system, a basketball court, will be created in Ozolaine Park, which has been lowered by Sarkandaugava. In Moscow’s suburbs – an urban garden with beds in boxes.

“A place where residents could come and cultivate their garden, grow their own medicinal plant, mint, medicinal marigold. Maybe someone will want to grow a cucumber or beet. Yes, it’s a ‘mask’. Why not!” Ilze Rukšāne, landscape architect of the landscape design workshop “ALPS”, believes.

The ideas for the improvement of the inner courtyards of the residential districts are not invented by the local government, but encouraged by the residents. In the courtyard of the 12th house on Lomonosova Street in the Latgale suburb, which will also be ready next spring, there will be a rather ambitious plan – terrace-like recreation areas, sunbathing and picnic places.

There is a belief that since herbs and vegetables will be planted in the planned urban garden by the residents of nearby houses, the place will not be destroyed.

Although the City Council emphasizes that more and more progressive-minded people live in the suburbs of Latgale, skeptics came to the presentation of development ideas.

People call the plans too bright for the Latgale suburb. Concerns – a beautiful place will be created, not for ordinary people, but – where to gather alcoholics.

The improvement and construction of three courtyards of three residential districts will cost Riga Municipality 600,000 euros.
