Romanian Mayor Escapes Prison Using Relative’s ID – Border Police Explanation

The corrupt mayor, who was sentenced by a Romanian court to five years in prison, managed to escape abroad using the identity card of a relative.

The Romanian border police explained today how the mayor of the northern city of Baia Mare, Catalin Kerekesh, who was yesterday finally sentenced by the Court of Appeal of Cluj to five years in prison for accepting bribes, managed to escape the country, Digi 24 TV reported, quoted by BTA.

After the sentencing, he was declared wanted, as he was found neither at his home nor at the town hall. After checking a number of border crossing points, the police established that Kerekes left Romania through the border crossing Petya on the border with Hungary. The man crossed the border crossing by taxi and used an identity document of a relative living abroad. At a press conference this morning, the chief inspector of the Border Police, Victor-Stefan Ivashku, specified that the convicted mayor crossed the Romanian-Hungarian border yesterday morning in a taxi, in which he sat in the front seat.

He has produced an actual ID belonging to a relative of his, with whom they look alike. The man whose document was used lives in another country in Europe, the head of the Border Police specified. Ivashku added that a disciplinary investigation has been launched against the border police officer who checked the vehicle and allowed it to leave the country. Katalin Kerekesh was sent to court by the National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA) on 20 May 2016 for accepting bribes in a prolonged form. Yesterday, the Court of Appeal in Cluj rejected his appeal and upheld the sentence of five years in prison handed down in February 2022 by the court in Cluj.
