Romania Grants Housing and Food Subsidies to Ukrainian Refugees with New Rules in Place

From May Romanian authorities introduce new rules to grant housing and food subsidies to Ukrainian refugees. Only those who have found a job will receive money, EFE news agency reported.

Also, Ukrainian citizens whose children go to school in Romania will be entitled to subsidies.

Under the new rules, the state will no longer pay the housing costs of landlords who accommodate refugees, and tenants will receive the subsidy directly. Refugee camps will receive subsidies from the state, as untill now. Details of those rules will be released at a later date, the agency said.

EFE explains that Bucharest is taking these measures against the backdrop of significant labor shortages in Romania.

From February 2022 until now in the country over 3.8 million Ukrainians arrived, but the majority of them went to other European countries. According to the Romanian authorities, about 110,000 Ukrainian refugees currently remain in the country, but less than 10% of them have a work contract.
