Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree 2023: Hours, Road Closures, and More

NEW YORK — Christmas is a thing of the past, but many still want to visit New York City’s iconic Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center.

Rockefeller Center’s 91st Christmas tree will be at 30 Rockefeller Plaza until this Saturday, January 13, according to real estate giant Tishman Speyer, which owns the building. Crews will take down the tree at 10 pm that day and, continuing with tradition, the 12-ton Norway spruce will be donated to Habitat for Humanity.

The reason a spruce is chosen almost every year is not only for its aesthetics but also for its structure, according to Rockefeller Center head gardener Erik Pauze.

“The common spruce is a beautiful, great tree. It’s majestic,” Pauze told our sister network NBC New York. “It looks fantastic and is strong enough to hold all the lights, wires and cables we have to put in there and hold up the 900-pound Swarovski star.”

The wood harvested from the tree is also very durable and flexible, according to a Habitat for Humanity spokesperson who spoke with The Center Magazine. It is widely used in floors, furniture and cabinets.

A few days before the most famous tree in the world is removed, we share with you what you need to know to visit it:
