RMI: code orange for the west of the country, lots of rain and strong wind

The RMI has issued a code orange for the west of the country until the early hours of Friday. The rest of the country receives code yellow. A powerful storm with gusts of up to 100 km/h is expected on the coast on Thursday. Ostend is taking measures.

According to the RMI, the wind at the sea will become very strong towards the evening on Thursday. Gusts of between 80 and 100 km/h are predicted, with peaks of up to 110 km/h or even more.

Ostend calls on its residents to avoid unnecessary travel. “Stay indoors as much as possible. Do not go for walks in parks and forests and securely secure loose objects on terraces and in gardens or take them indoors. Do not park your car near trees.”

During the duration of the storm, both breakwaters and the picket fence in Ostend will be closed. From noon, Sports Park De Schorre will also close for the rest of the day.

The emergency number 1722 is activated for those who need help from the fire brigade. The number applies to non-urgent assistance. For urgent help you still call the emergency number 112.

The stormy weather may continue until the night. Later during the night it becomes drier and quieter.

The RMI predicts intense precipitation during Thursday afternoon, especially for the south of the country. In the northwest of the country, the showers may be accompanied by a few thunderclaps.
