Waldenbuch – On Twitter has the Chocolate giant now the prototype Ritter Sport “Presented in paper”. However, future use of paper packaging seems far from certain at the moment. The group openly admits that the switch to paper is difficult: “Even our ‘in paper’ prototype cannot protect against melting and grease stains can occur. We now want to face this challenge so that the packaging stays securely tight, ”says Ritter Sport the problems with the noble goal of more sustainable packaging.

Ritter Sport announces on its website why paper is now being tested as packaging: it is much easier to dispose of. In addition, many more countries would have an organized recycling system for paper than for the polypropylene used in the current products. From an environmental perspective, paper is definitely the better solution, but it is not unconditionally suitable for chocolate.
Ritter Sport: There is no perfect paper yet
The problem here is with product protection. Paper does not offer a barrier against fat. While other products such as rice or pasta can be easily packed in paper, chocolate with its relatively high fat content is not that easy.
Over time, grease stains could appear on the packaging or the chocolate could even smell the environment. The perfect paper that protects chocolate from environmental influences does not yet exist. Ritter Sport therefore relied on the help of customers to develop a new material.
Aldi and Edeka are also currently experimenting with new, sustainable packaging.
