“Rising Twilight Divorce Rates: Couples Ending Marriages Doubled in a Decade”

190,000 marriages, lowest ever

Male age 33.7, Female age 31.3 First marriage

Twilight divorce 17% of all divorces

Increased by more than 80% in 10 years

Due to the economic slowdown and the growing desire for self-realization among young people, the late marriage trend is becoming more and more evident. The number of marriages has also fallen, reaching an all-time low last year. Twilight divorces have increased by more than 80% in 10 years.

According to the National Statistical Office on the 16th, the average age of first marriage last year was 33.7 for men and 31.3 for women, up 0.4 and 0.2 years from a year ago, respectively. The average age at first marriage last year was the highest ever for both men and women. Compared to 10 years ago, males rose by 1.6 years and females by 1.9 years.

The number of marriages last year was 192,000, down 0.4% from a year ago. This is the smallest number since statistics were compiled in 1970.

The number of marriages declined the most in the late 20s for both men and women. Unlike the past, when there were many cases of marriage in the late 20s, it is interpreted that this is because recently, there has been an increase in cases of active social life such as work life in that age group.

The marriage rate, which is the number of marriages per 1,000 people, was the highest in both men and women in their early 30s at 40.3 and 41.3, respectively.

As marriages declined, so did divorces. Last year, the number of divorces was 93,000, down 8.3% from a year ago. However, the number of twilight divorces after being married for more than 30 years has steadily increased except for last year. There were 15,651 cases of divorce at dusk last year, an 81% increase compared to 10 years ago (8,647 cases).

Divorces among couples who have been married for 0 to 4 years account for 18.6% of the total number of divorces. This was followed by 5 to 9 years (18%), 30 years or more (16.8%), and 10 to 14 years (14.8%). Twilight divorces accounted for the second largest share after divorces less than 10 years old.

The number of marriages with foreigners last year was 17,000, up 27.2% from a year ago. The number of divorces with foreigners decreased by 5.9% to 6,000.
