Rising Number of Passengers and Flights at Dutch Airports in Third Quarter 2023

06 Nov 2023 at 05:07

In the third quarter, almost 21 million passengers flew to and from Dutch airports. That is 11 percent more than in the same period in 2022. We have been flying more every year since 2020, but before the corona pandemic we flew even more often.

Not only did the number of passengers increase, the number of flights was also higher in the past quarter than in 2022. 143,000 flights for passengers, mail and goods arrived at Dutch airports, 8 percent more than last year.

Before the corona pandemic, the number of passengers was even higher. For example, in 2019, 23.1 million passengers flew through Dutch airports in the third quarter. And in 2018 the number of passengers was also higher than now.

The amount of freight transported in the third quarter, at almost 348,000 tons, was almost 10 percent lower than a year earlier. With fewer passenger flights departing since the pandemic, there was some more room at airports for transport flights. That effect is now disappearing.

Of the almost 21 million passengers, 86 percent flew via Schiphol in the past quarter. The rest traveled via airports in Eindhoven, Rotterdam-The Hague, Maastricht and Groningen. The busiest day was Monday, August 7. At that time, 246,000 travelers flew to and from Dutch airports.
