Rinkēvičs: EU Solidarity and Political Unity with Latvia, Lithuania and Poland Have Important Aspects to Reduce Efficiency of Lukashenko’s Regime

European Union (EU) solidarity and political unity with Latvia, Lithuania and Poland is an important aspect of reducing the effectiveness of the hybrid attack on the regime of Belarusian authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko, Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkev said during a working visit to Warsaw with Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau.

The Foreign Ministry informed that today Rinkēvičs met with Rau to discuss regional security issues, including the security situation in Ukraine, the current situation on the border between the EU and Belarus, as well as co-operation in NATO format.

Rinkēvičs believes that the EU must continue to be active in the directions of action it has begun, namely, to continue preventive work in countries of transit and origin.

“It is necessary to continue to work in a coordinated manner in international formats in order to strengthen the international community’s understanding of the real situation and what is happening on the border with Belarus,” the Minister acknowledged.

The Foreign Minister expressed confidence that Russia is currently facing the greatest political and security challenges in the European Neighborhood, and that it is now important for Ukraine to receive strong and united international support. Russia’s security challenges in the region are exacerbated by the Lukashenko regime’s hybrid attack on EU borders and confrontational rhetoric and threats.

The two ministers also discussed the forthcoming EU Eastern Partnership summit to be held in Brussels on 15 December. Rinkēvičs thanked for Poland’s active involvement in the Three Seas Initiative and the Investment Fund, as well as informed about the seventh summit of the Three Seas Initiative and the business forum to be organized in June 2022 in Riga.

LETA has already written that since the spring hybrid attack on the regime of the Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko, attempts have been made to send thousands of illegal immigrants from Belarus to Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, most of them arriving in Belarus as tourists.

On the other hand, since November 8, there have been massive attempts by migrants from Belarus to break into Polish territory. There have also been clashes between migrants and Polish border guards, the army and the police.
