Ridwan Kamil Called Rioters in Bandung Demonstrations Not Workers

Bandung, CNN Indonesia

Governor of West Java Ridwan Kamil stated the rioters in a push demonstration Omnibus Law Cipta Kerja in Bandung did not come from the workers.

“Earlier the workers stated that they conveyed their aspirations, were genuine and did not want to be ridden by other parties. So they felt they were not responsible for matters of anarchism, the riots that occurred the previous day because in their view it was 100 percent not workers’ representatives,” said the man. Emil is familiarly called at Gedung Sate, Thursday (8/10).

During two consecutive days of demonstrations in Bandung, October 6-7, 209 people were arrested by the Bandung Police. They are suspected of committing anarchist acts.

Apart from undergoing questioning by the police, hundreds of suspected rioters also underwent a rapid test at the Bandung Police Headquarters. As a result, 13 people were declared reactive and will undergo a swab test at Sartika Asih Hospital.

“I also checked with the Regional Police that those who were detained for doing the damage turned out to be 100 percent not from the workers. And I say that according to their Covid-19 procedure, a Covid-19 test was immediately carried out,” he said.

“If it turns out there is something positive, it indicates how prone the crowds are during Covid, especially in emotional conditions and close proximity, especially not wearing masks,” he added.

Demonstration against the Omnibus Law of the Work Creation Law on the third day, Thursday (8/10) in front of Gedung Sate Bandung, again became chaotic. The throwing action colored the demo this afternoon.

Kapolrestabes Bandung Sr. Comr. Ulung Sampurna Jaya said that the masses who threw them at the officers did not come from among the workers and students.

“That is a group other than students and workers,” said Ulung.

According to Ulung, the masses started throwing them after the workers’ group finished demonstrating in front of Gedung Sate. He considered that the masses outside the workers and students were then suspected of provoking a commotion.

“They deliberately looked for the moment it was over. Then they looked for a situation to make a riot and provoke emotions from the officers, so we are not provoked and we remain,” said Ulung.

The riots at Gedung Sate occurred after Emil met and accepted the aspirations of demonstrators who rejected the Omnibus Law on the Job Creation Law.

After the meeting, the mass of workers gradually withdrew from Gedung Sate. However, shortly thereafter, a new crowd arrived around Jalan Diponegoro, which is not far from Gedung Sate. The majority of them are teenagers and are immediately involved in riots with the police.

There are several rioters who were successfully secured. They were then taken to the security post and some were immediately taken to the corners around Gedung Sate.
