Richard Müller and His Extraordinary Message – Music review

The leader of the ancient Slovak Banquet – one of the most remarkable Slovak pop rock bands at the end of the 1980s, significantly surpassing the Czech official scene – has absolute talent and charisma. This is not such a discovery, but thanks to that Müller can sing rock and acoustic songs, such as the album Neuč vtáka lietať, chansons by Michal Horáček and Petr Hapka or more serious things in general, of which there are not that many in pop music.

On the new album, he was able to reconnect all this, probably with the idea: “Throw away what was and what will come, be, or not be in, let others of it shit. Forget everything that has cut you in your soul, and get on the nerves of those who scare you with hell, ”as Siedme nebo sings in the opening song.

The whole album is strong not only in terms of honest and above-average expressive lyrics, but also in terms of music. It begins with the romantic opening song Siedme nebo, continues with the rock Defect on the Soul, a song with an almost gospel introduction and a southern guitar of the Feast of the Thirteenth and the social probe Mária Televízia.

Also included are tributes to Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards and photographer Jan Saudek, or perhaps the most serious song about the current social and Internet threats of Memory Thieves and a title song with a guitar solo in the style of Santana. Don’t just live “You don’t know the day or the hours, and suddenly you’re transplanted into the dirt, that’s why I lived a little wildly so I wouldn’t be here, just to the eye,” Müller sings.

Sex and techno. The Berlin club Berghain is one of the world's best, but it's hard to get inside

An extraordinary confession by Richard Müller in one of the other really serious songs. The whole album Hour between a Dog and a Wolf – which supposedly marks the time between three and four o’clock in the morning, when artists are said to create the best works, but also dies the most people – proves that Richard Müller is not “on the eye” on the music scene and hopefully that it won’t be long.
