REVIEW: The French Triumph of Love brought nothing new

The author’s production by director Oliviera Py (direction, text and music) is inspired by the fairy tale of the Brothers Grimm about a girl in love trapped in a tower, her dear prince and a war-obsessed intriguing general. It was played on the evening of September 12 and on the afternoon of September 13 in the Pilsen area of DEPO2015.

Formally, the production moves between opera, operetta, cabaret or vaudeville, not to be overlooked is the inspiration of silent grotesque and film melodrama, unheard of musical references. Five actors sing well, play the piano or cello and move experienced in the level of acting exaggeration. Here and there, a scenographic gesture indicates a more serious war theme, but in principle it is a slightly entertaining performance, easily communicating with the audience.

With the hour-long chamber-filled title, all possible festivals can be successfully crossed, which was also confirmed by the words of the actors at the discussion after Saturday’s performance.

But it does not bring anything new, theatrically inspiring. Especially in the context of Czech theater, where the more experienced spectator thought of productions from the 1980s, such as Aucassin and Nicoletta of the Smíchov Labyrinth or the playful and musically equally professional production of the Hradec Králové Dragon. And more examples could be found.

The dramaturgy of the Pilsen festival may remove another famous name from the list of directors, but this time the theatrical holiday, which would leave a more significant mark in the minds of the audience, did not take place.

The Pilsen Theater Festival will end on Sunday 13 September with an evening performance of Havel’s Beggar’s Opera produced by the Brno City Theater. Until September 17, it will also offer an epilogue for the Pilsen audience in the form of several spectator titles from Prague theaters.
