Review: Summer in Mara – NWTV

Summer in Mara sounds like a game that we have seen a hundred times and it is a bit too: you are on an uninhabited island and you go there planting trees and crops and can make different constructions to live there. improve. Read our review here.

You may immediately think of the description Animal Crossing: New Horizons because of the great success, but that is not entirely justified. The big difference is that Summer in Mara gives you more to do in the form of assignments and a storyline to follow. Unfortunately, this is not all that strongly put together and this is also where the biggest problem of the game comes into play.

It starts off pretty cool: you start as a child on an island, where a strange but very friendly creature raised you. You learn the most important actions of the game on the basis of some simple chores from your mother figure. Cut down trees for materials, but keep the balance of nature and make sure you plant a new tree again. Water and harvest your crops to eventually make juice or a meal to satisfy your hunger. This is pretty soothing and it’s kind of a mix of a survival game with tasks and a storyline, but it’s all very quiet and peaceful.

It all gets less when the story really gets going and you can visit other islands with your boat. Sail to another island, talk to someone at the port, talk to someone on the other side of the island, talk to people at the port again, they will only want to give you information if you go all the way back to your own island to certain kind of vegetable for them to grow, and so on. Summer in Mara slowly but surely transforms into “Fetch Quest: The Game”. You are only solving simple things that never get really interesting. Let people or just figure everything out for yourself, or make the quests a lot deeper.

As such can Summer in Mara recommended only for the people who need serious occupational therapy, but even then games like Stardew Valley, My Time in Portia and eventually even Animal Crossing: New Horizons (although the latter is quite different) a much better purchase. It is a pity, because the beginning is so nice, atmospheric, peaceful and soothing.

Summer in Mara was played on Nintendo Switch for this review. The game is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.
