REVIEW: Santa revels in a murderous past

Santa is a fed up bearded man with a murderous past, and before he starts handing out presents to the good guys and coal to the bad guys like he does every year, he drinks in a bar and curses the human race. Humiliating, hungry only for money. And those molesters are no better, they want everything at once, just objects and consumerism. In short, Santa is seriously toying with the idea that after all these centuries he’s going to get rid of them.

And while a dejected one gets into a flying sled with the slogan “as long as I keep the course, the others will manage”, and then loses the battle with his stomach in sharp curves, on Earth his grown children with wives and the children descend upon the disgustingly rich woman. It is quite difficult for them to tolerate each other, but with the vision that they pump out their mother for a certain amount, they strive to live up to the obligatory Christmas mood. But they have no idea that well-armed and well-minded thieves are escaping with the millions in the heavily guarded safe here. Santa Claus lands in the garden right after them…

Forty-three-year-old Norwegian director Tommy Wirkola made the black action comedy Dead Snow at home, in which he brought Nazi zombies to life on the frozen plains of Northern Norway. The sequel was titled Dead Snow: Red vs. The dead and zombies within it were plotting total genocide. The film Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (already co-produced by the USA and Germany) worked on the layout of a well-known fairy tale. Now Wirkola comes with his first American film, which entertains in the spirit of the previous ones, but also uses prominent elements of romantic Christmas films in a funny and parodic way. And there are also references to famous works such as Home Alone or Death Trap.

The dialogue is witty, like the exhortation to “Be silly, but don’t be silly out loud,” should be popular. The film doesn’t lose its rhythm even for a moment, the battles and brawls are imaginative, terrifying and explicitly cruel (a poinsettia stuck in the opponent’s eye), colored by romantic and joyful Christmas music. And the grand finale, which more than vividly shows what is most important in life, perfectly parodies the whole Christmas feeling.

Stranger Things star David Harbour’s Santa Claus is charming, whether he’s vomiting from his sleigh, angrily preparing for a shift he wants to get through as soon as possible, or scolding his “cowardly reindeer” for leaving him. to the killers. However, his relationship with little Trudy and, after all, with the reindeer, would not only impress an older cynic.

Misenka Trudy, who is the only one of all the characters who still believes in Santa Claus, and thanks to this she will contribute to the liquidation of the thieves, is suitably cute and in her only wish “that mum and dad reconcile”, also correctly touching.

A crazy night is pure fun, which in the pre-Christmas rush, the flood of advertisements for more or less insignificant gifts and at the same time loudly clamoring Advent collecting, will especially appeal to all those who are fed up with everything.
