Review: Asus Vivobook S 15 OLED BAPE Edition – Unique Collaboration, Specs, and Performance

As the start of school approaches, parents and university students may realize like a bolt of lightning that they should get a laptop within a tight deadline. This is when the endless browsing and panic buying begins, which usually ends with the purchase of a device that the customer is not at all satisfied with – that is why it is worth thinking well in advance.

For example, Apple’s MacBook Air family can be a perfect choice for school and office use, but these laptops are particularly boring and plain in terms of their design. That’s when Asus’s new device, the Vivobook S 15 OLED, comes into the picture, the latest edition of which was created in collaboration with the Japanese fashion brand A Bathing Ape – or BAPE for short – with so many extras that it’s hard to list them all at once. Let’s see what this special collaboration hides and what kind of laptop the new Vivobook has become.

Every bit of it is unique

BAPE’s trademark terrain pattern is echoed almost everywhere – from laptop cardboard packaging to Windows loading screens to wallpaper. By the way, the box of the device is of extremely high quality, and compared to that of traditional laptops, it is huge, which is due to the fact that we don’t even accidentally find just one laptop in it. In addition to the portable computer, the collection also includes a fabric carrying bag – which has plenty of space for accessories -, an Asus Marshmallow mouse – which of course has a unique pattern -, a BAPE figure, and a number of stickers that can be stuck either on the laptop or the keyboard.

In addition to these, of course, we also find mandatory accessories in the packaging, such as the charging cable and the user manual, but with so many extras, these are no longer interesting. Of course, all this does not add to the user experience, Excel will not load faster than a plastic figure, and the operating time will not be longer either. However, it is precisely these “gifts” that make such and similar collaborations unique, as the customer receives not only a simple laptop, but also something extra with which he can express his admiration.

By the way, as mentioned, BAPE is a Japanese fashion brand that specializes in lifestyle and streetwear for men, women and children. Like the various so-called hypebeast brands, they also work with amazing prices – you can’t really find a simple t-shirt for less than HUF 26,000, and for a sweater they charge HUF 100,000 without batting an eye, but this is the usual in this area of the fashion world, at most you can only be offended by the prices.

There are no compromises

The highlight of the collaboration is of course the laptop itself, which in this case is an Asus Vivobook S 15 OLED, one of the most popular series of the Taiwanese brand. The assembly quality of the device is otherwise flawless, the cover with a terrain pattern is made of aluminum, but a fingerprint-repellant layer would not have hurt, because the matte surface collects them like a magnet, which greatly worsens the overall picture. Weighing just 1.6 kilograms, it’s easy to carry, and it’s barely bigger than a 13-inch laptop, despite its 15.6-inch display.

And speaking of the display: the picture of the WQHD+, i.e. 2880 x 1620 pixels, 16:9 aspect ratio, 120 Hz refresh rate and up to 600 nits white light output is beautiful, the colors are saturated, and the blacks are really black – the only negative only the viewing angles matter, when looking at the display from the side or from above, the colors quickly start to distort, a greenish tint appears on the entire display.

In terms of ports – unlike a MacBook, for example – there is no shortage, on the right side of the device there is a USB-A, while on the right side there is a USB-C, a second USB-A, an HDMI 1.4 and a combo jack connector next to the charging port. Cooling is provided by only one fan, the machine draws in cold air from the bottom of the device, and hot air is blown out next to the USB port on the left. By the way, the laptop is by no means cool, during the test period, certain parts of it started to heat up even after a short browsing session – in return, however, the fan made almost no sound, and if you don’t use the device on your lap, the heating is almost unnoticeable.

There is a souffle in it, but that’s not what he’s going to play with

Inside the Vivobook, a 13th generation Intel Core i5-13500H processor is ticking, which is more than enough to perform everyday tasks. However, we may run into obstacles if, for example, we use the laptop for creative work (image editing, video editing) or for games, because in the absence of a dedicated video card, we will only be able to do these things with difficulty. By the way, Intel’s integrated Iris Xe chip is responsible for graphic tasks, which is not unusable, but cannot compete with dedicated solutions.

We get 16 gigabytes of memory, which we will no longer be able to expand in the future, while we have 512 gigabytes of storage available – but we can increase this as we wish in the future.

During the test period, the laptop could operate for an average of 6-7 hours on a single charge, which is not very outstanding, in fact, in this price category, the Vivobook is rather in the second half of the imaginary ranking list – after the brutal battery life of the 15-inch MacBook Air, it was a bit disappointing that the working day has not yet ended, Windows has already signaled that it would not hurt to put the device on the charger soon.

In summary

Despite the modest battery life, Asus’s new laptop turned out to be a very well put together machine, not to mention the extras such as the fingerprint reader built into the power button or the security lock covering the FullHD webcam. The Asus Vivobook S 15 OLED BAPE Edition can now be ordered in limited numbers via the Asus website, the Taiwanese company is asking HUF 485,000 for the whole package, which includes all the extras we mentioned – but if the very first buyers get one more addition BAPE and they can also be enriched with a mouse pad and monitor cleaner, so you really don’t have to spend anything extra.
