Results of the 2021 regional & departmental elections

For the first time, regional and departmental elections (formerly called cantonal elections) were organized at the same time. The first round took place on June 20; the second round, June 27.

They were originally scheduled to be held in March 2021, but had been postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Voters vote for a list of candidates who run region-wide. If a list obtains the absolute majority of the votes in the first round, it obtains 25% of the seats. The other seats are shared, proportionally, between all the lists which have obtained more than 5% of the votes.

If a second round is necessary, only the lists having obtained more than 10% of the votes can be maintained. The top list gets 25% of the seats. The other seats are shared, proportionally, between all the lists which have obtained more than 5% of the votes.

The regional council thus constituted shall vote to designate, from among its members, the president of this regional executive. The term of office is six years.

In Corsica, Guyana and Martinique, these are territorial elections.

Mayotte, New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Saint-Barthélemy, Saint-Martin, Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon and Wallis-et-Futuna are not affected by the regional 2021.

Voters vote for a woman-man pair who present themselves at the canton level (there are about 2,000 of them). This is a two-round majority vote. If no pair obtains an absolute majority with a number of votes greater than 25% of those registered, a second round is organised. Only the pairs having obtained at least 12.5% of the votes of registered voters can maintain themselves. It is the pair that came first who sits on the departmental council. They are elected for six years.

The departmental council thus constituted votes to designate, among its members, the president or the president of this regional executive.

There are no departmental elections in Paris, in the communes of the metropolis of Greater Lyon, nor in Corsica, Guyana, Martinique, New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Saint-Barthélemy, Saint-Martin, Saint-Pierre- and Miquelon and Wallis and Futuna.
