The quarantine in the country has been extended until April 30.
As Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonīte emphasized at the government meeting, the aim of the renewed restrictions is to protect those municipalities where the situation is currently better and to localize the spread of the South African virus by vaccinating as many risk groups as possible, especially in municipalities with high morbidity rates.
“We very much hope that we will be able to stabilize the situation and prevent this wave from rising high. After Easter, we may be able to discuss other things, but for now – for these two weeks – we need to focus on testing and vaccination,” she said.
“This amendment does not introduce anything new, either in business or in any other area of activity – it simply sends the message that we will stay home before Easter, as we did before Christmas, and reduce traffic, hustle and bustle during Easter,” the prime minister added.
Restrictions on movement between municipalities will be in force from this Saturday to April 6 inclusive.
It is envisaged that during this time it will be allowed to move between the municipalities of the big city and its surrounding areas, as well as to cross the municipal boundaries, going to work, to bus stations, airports and seaports or for other important reasons.
According to Šimonīte, on Monday the expert council will consider what additional security requirements should be introduced during the pre-holiday period, especially considering that people are likely to go shopping more actively.
Previously, restrictions on movement between municipalities in Lithuania were introduced in mid-December, but from 16 March only remained in the municipalities with the worst epidemiological situation.
