Residents of Bronx Building Endure Deplorable Living Conditions and Lack of Response

A puddle of urine at the main entrance is the welcome received by the residents of a building located at 2422 University Avenue, in the Fordham neighborhood of the Bronx. In addition, in the apartments there are leaks, cracks, pests and very cold, because the heating service does not work.

In the midst of anger and frustration, due to not feeling heard, the neighbors called Univision 41 to report the deplorable conditions in which they reside. The majority are Hispanic.

Carolina Presinal, one of the tenants, who lives with her two young daughters, pointed out the poor condition of the floor and walls in the hallways. “My daughter was playing here and she passed a mouse by her side,” she explained to our reporter Alejandro Condis.

She claims that, no matter how much she cleans her apartment, rats and cockroaches invade them.

Carolina’s mother usually visits her to help her with the chores of caring for the girls, but she has to dress like an Eskimo to tolerate the cold inside the building.

One floor above, Rafael lives with his wife, and showed the obvious leaks in the bathroom wall and ceiling. Others have mold, which poses a danger to your respiratory health.

Her granddaughter told Univision 41 that she is tired of calling 311 to report problems, and even showed the emails she has sent to the company that manages the building, but the result is always the same: nothing happens.

A homeless man sleeps in the lobby of the building

Added to all the calamities experienced by the residents of the building in Fordham is a defect in the main entrance that prevents it from closing, allowing anyone to enter as “Pedro at his house.”

Neighbors have photographed a homeless man who usually enters and sleeps in the lobby of the building, next to the stairs, exposing his genitals.

Pierina Sánchez, councilor for the area in New York City, told Univision 41: “We as tenants have rights.”

“More than 2,000 buildings have been taken to court in the last year for not providing hot water or heating in the winter,” said the councilor, who hopes that the situation will change soon for these neighbors.
