The Reserve des Sebastianer von 1316 company marched at the Oktoberfest in Munich in 2018. This year they had chosen a more distant destination: the Steuben Parade in New York.
The traditional “German-American Steuben Parade” parades through New York every year on the third Saturday in September. The goal is to celebrate German culture and honor the contributions and successes of German-speaking immigrants in the USA. The route runs from Fifth Avenue to 86th Street, which is also called “German Boulevard”. But it’s not just the parade that took place on Saturday afternoon (September 16th) that is an event. The entire weekend is dedicated to German-American friendship.

The riflemen of the Reserve Company, who, led by Forest King Andreas Auler, Vice President Guillermo Porras, first captain Oliver Küster and second captain Frank Lumma, had already traveled to New York on Wednesday, also reported this enthusiastically. The “travel group” comprised 68 people, as there were companions alongside the 30 marching comrades. After sightseeing, on Saturday we first went to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the New York parish church in New York, where Archbishop Cardinal Timothy Dolan held a service. Afterwards, the approximately two-hour parade 2 starts in the best weather.
In addition to the Reserve company, police delegations from Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Württemberg as well as carnival groups from Cologne and Schleswig Holstein arrived from Germany. “The deep connection to Germany was very noticeable,” reports Oliver Küster. “It gave us great pleasure to be a part of this beautiful parade.” At the subsequent Oktoberfest in Central Park, there were many opportunities for the people of Düsseldorf to get to know the German community in New York and make friends.
