Oceânico Gilson Cantarino Municipal Hospital in Niterói Becomes a Reference in Healthcare Services and Organ Donation

The Oceânico Gilson Cantarino Municipal Hospital (HMOGC) has already become a reference and this Monday (29) was the day for professionals to come together to celebrate the good results obtained in the unit. Initially only for the treatment of patients with Covid-19, he extended services to the population and has already provided more than 64 thousand consultations in the outpatient clinic alone and more than 10 thousand a hospital. Currently, the hospital has a Rehabilitation Center, examinations and a Surgery Center. This is one of the city’s hospitals that strengthens an action that could be an opportunity for many to wait for a long life and a better quality: organ donation.

The Department of Health has been improving its work and expanding the qualifications of professionals to identify patients who are suitable for organ donation. The teams are going on training courses to work in providing organs and tissues for transplants. The operation is carried out within the protocols of the State Transplantation Program – RJ Transplantes.

The city’s health secretary, Anamaria Schneider, talks about the importance of the hospital for the city of Niterói.

“The Oceânico hospital was fundamental in dealing with Covid-19 in Niterói. With the dissolution of the building and a change in the profile of the unit, today it is part of the health network and serves dozens of people every day, whether surgical patients, rehabilitation center patients or those who have been transferred from other units. It is a very important unit for the town and the people”, said the secretary.

The hospital offers tomography, mammography, laboratory tests, ultrasound, echocardiogram, digestive endoscopy, colonoscopy, electrocardiogram and radiation tests.

The vice president of Hospital and Emergency Care at the Niterói Department of Health, Ramon Sanchez, recalled the importance of the unit during the pandemic.

“Our effect was to provide more than a thousand services in the first minute when the hospital was the base in the fight against covid-19. Then, in a second moment, we were able to expand the offer of health services to save even more lives”, said Ramon.

Surgical Center – The Surgical Center has three independent rooms where interventions can be performed even at the same time, if necessary. One floor of the unit was dedicated to receiving patients as they left the surgery centre. The city expanded the offer for breast and cervical cancer surgeries by starting procedures at the hospital in March 2022, reaching zero on the regulatory waiting list. The surgeries performed on site are: general surgery, vascular surgery, urological surgery, proctological surgery, gynecological surgery, oncological surgery, dermatological surgical procedures. From March 2022 to April 13, 2023, 5,181 surgeries were performed.

HMOGC general director Eduardo Maia highlighted the importance of extended patient care.

“We have a challenge when we manage a hospital, it is our practice to understand the quality of care when we look at that patient in front of us, this is obvious. The challenge is to have a broader view, to see the best that can be done with the health network in mind. We need to translate this attention into love that goes beyond what we can see, but for those who don’t have attention and access, it makes a big difference,” he said.

The unit also has a Rehabilitation Center, whose primary function was initially to rehabilitate post-covid patients, but with the promotion of vaccination and case control, the Rehabilitation Center was brought into the network village health and began to rehabilitate other types of patients.

Organ harvesting – At the unit, when a patient is eligible for organ harvesting, a team from Niterói makes the first preparations and alerts the state transplant center; joins a number of other health units who work to ensure that organs reach patients as quickly as possible.
