The so-called Tully-Monster has puzzled researchers for decades. The animal lived around 300 million years ago and is best known to paleontologists for its odd anatomy. It is 15 centimeters long on average, has a caudal fin, a spindle-shaped body and eyes on two long, thin appendages that jut out to the left and right of the body.

A strange phenomenon that left researchers puzzled for decades as to whether the animal was an invertebrate or a vertebrate. So was it a fish or a worm or something else entirely? Since the first fossil findswhich was discovered in the USA in the 1950s, researchers are looking for answers.

Tully Monster: Paleontology mystery solved

A Japanese research team now wants to have found them. For their study, 153 fossils were inspected using a 3D laser scanner and X-ray examination. In the specialist magazine “Palaeontology” published the researcher the result: the animal was invertebrate.

What remains unresolved, however, is what kind of invertebrate the Tully monster was. It is possible that it was some kind of worm or snail. A fish-like species, such as the lancelet fish, would also be conceivable. The researchers are hoping for more investigations of the Tully monster more knowledge about the diversity of the former life on earth. (lro)
