Rescue workers in Beirut: no sign of life under rubble anymore

Rescue workers in the Lebanese capital have lost hope that anyone else will be found alive among the rubble after the massive explosion in Beirut last month. “Technically there is no sign of life,” said the chief of the rescue team at a press conference.

Thursday the heartbeats and breaths of a human in a collapsed building. It gave hope for a miracle: could someone still be saved a month after the disaster? But after three days of searching, the chance of that scenario is gone, according to the rescue workers.

That’s not to say the search is over. The team will continue until the entire collapsed building has been combed through. At the time of writing, 95 percent of the debris has been searched.

The rescue has dominated Lebanese news and social media. It provided a ray of hope for a city where nearly 200 people died in early August. At that time a stockpile of about 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate exploded in the port of the city.
