Renowned Puppeteer Blacius Subono Dies After Performance at Campaign Event

KOMPAS.com – Puppeteer and retired lecturer in puppetry at the Indonesian Arts Institute (ISI) Surakarta, Blacius Subono, died after performing at the Ganjar-Mahfud grand campaign in Solo, Central Java, Saturday (10/2/2024).

ISI Surakarta Public Relations Officer Esha Karwinarno said that Dalang Blacius Subono died at 09.15 WIB, Saturday.

“I’m still at Moewardi Hospital, the body was brought here,” said Esha when contacted by Kompas.com, Saturday.

“Died while on stage at the People’s Celebration in front of Solo City Hall,” he continued.

Chronology of Blacius Subono’s departure

Esha said that Subono suddenly collapsed after performing an art performance on stage at the People’s Celebration for candidate pair number 3.

After the performance, the event is planned to continue with the presentation of the puppets.

“They were lining up, to hand over the puppets, Mr. Bono was positioned behind Mr. Ganjar,” said Esha.

The plan is that Puan Maharani will hand over the puppets to Ganjar and then continue to Mahfud MD.

“Before that incident, Mr Bono fell. “That’s the stage, the closing is the presentation of the puppets,” he explained.

When asked about the cause of Subono’s death, Esha could not confirm because she had not received news from the doctor who treated him.

Even so, said Esha, the former ISI Surakarta lecturer had a history of heart disease.

He inherited his puppeteering skills from his father, who also worked as a puppeteer.

In fact, Bono was known as a child puppeteer who was diligent in performing when he was 12 years old.

After junior high school, Bono studied at the Karawitan Conservatory in Surakarta and continued with undergraduate education majoring in Puppetry Arts and a postgraduate program in Art Creation with an interest in Indonesian Puppetry at ISI Solo.

The puppeteer’s family environment and formal education in musical arts shaped his skills as a painter, puppeteer, music arranger, composer and playwright at the same time.

He worked on musical arrangements for various famous artists, such as puppeteer Ki Mantep Sudharsono, Ki Anom Suroto, dance artists Sardono W. Kusumo, Retno Maruti, and Elly D. Luthan.

Subono has also been invited to perform internationally, such as in the United States, Canada, England, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan.

For his work, Bono received the Satya Lencana Budaya from the Javanese Cultural Institute, an arts award from the Indonesian Minister of Education and Culture in 1996.
