The construction costs for the construction work on the historical exhibition halls on the Darmstadt Musenhügel will rise by more than five and a half million euros to 30 million euros.

The renovation of the historical exhibition building on the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt is becoming more and more expensive for the city. According to a cost overview drawn up by the Darmstadt urban development company in September 2020, the cost of the renovation project will increase by a further 5.7 million euros to 30.1 million euros. The city councilors are to vote on a corresponding municipal bill on next Thursday.

At the beginning of 2019, the municipal company, including risk surcharges, had calculated costs of around 24.5 million euros. The city council then made an additional two and a half million euros available.

Culture advisor Ludger Hünnekens, who is also the first operations manager of the Darmstadt cultural institute, and the commercial operations manager Bernhard Baum cite “unexpected cost increases” as reasons for the renewed cost increase.

The reason for this is, on the one hand, the “poor execution of statically relevant components in the construction phase” of the historical exhibition building, according to the draft resolution. On the other hand, various renovation work had been poorly carried out in the post-war period. In the six-page resolution proposal, there is talk of additional expenses for the shell, the building construction, the technical building equipment and the ancillary construction costs. According to Hünnekens and Baum, the corona pandemic also had an impact on cost development because expanded hygiene rules had to be introduced and monitored. In addition, the construction site facilities had to be expanded and the logistics and the construction process had to be adapted to the distance rules.

According to a spokesman for the city, the construction work will continue until late summer. Completion of the construction project would therefore be delayed by two and a half years.
