Renovated State Archaeological Collection in Munich Reopens with Modern Exhibits and Free Admission

People like to hide their most valuable treasures so that they are less easy to find. The treasurers of the Free State of Bavaria, for example, have placed their archaeological finds on the edge of the English Garden, in a small side street behind the National Museum, hidden in a box of boxes whose front red-brown giving the impression that everything is rusted. “That’s the way it should be,” he said Markus BlumeThe Minister of Science and Art of Bavaria, when he opened the treasure chest again on Monday afternoon in a ceremony with Prime Minister Markus Söder, his party colleague from the CSU.

The State Archaeological Collection on Lerchenfeldstrasse was closed for renovation work for eight years on Wednesday it reopens to the interested public and entry is free for everyone until Sunday. After that, adults must pay seven euros, children and young people under the age of 18 are still allowed in for free. Above all, the “modern presentation” should appeal to them as Prime Minister Söder once said: “Everything is in new building quality.”

This also includes the facade made of Corten steel, a weather resistant structural steel, which is intended to protect the surface from further corrosion and gives the whole thing a special patina. This steel has already been used in the old building, which was founded in 1976, and which was re-glazed as part of the general renovation, which cost 66 million euros; The building now shines “in its old new beauty,” as Blume put it in his welcome speech.

The exterior shine is rather dull, but the true brilliance of the State Archaeological Collection is mostly on the inside anyway. Collection director Rupert Gebhard promises future visitors that the exhibition will “touch them emotionally”: “This is not an intellectual construct.” -a young audience especially through graphic novels by the Munich comic artist Frank Schmolke, and from July onwards there will be an installation of augmented reality, ie the possibility of an expanded view of reality with the help of computers.

In fact, you can already use digital communication methods. Cabaret artist Luise Kinseher (“Mama Bavaria”) recorded recordings for an audio tour, and you can use a QR code to guide you through the rooms on your smartphone – an invaluable aid when looking at the approximately 15,000 shows that are presented, which only represents a fraction of the collection. About 20 million objects are stored in the deposits, the whole spectrum includes a hand ax from the last 100,000 years BC to a piece of vessels buried in Munich at the end of the Second World War and rediscovered in 2012.

In his welcoming speech, Prime Minister Söder pointed out how the image of archeology has changed over the past three or four decades. “It used to be like this: you dig and dig. Today it’s modern explorers,” he said, drawing on perhaps the most famous modern archaeologist, the movie character Indiana Jones, portrayed by actor Harrison Ford, for comparison. “It’s not like Indiana Jones anymore, it’s CSI: History.”

Therefore, the museum is not designed as a series of discoveries; but it is intended to work out and make clear historical connections and social developments over thousands of years. Söder admitted that history was “always interesting, interesting and exciting to him” and that he remained interested in studying archeology after his political career. The newly designed museum is sure to be “a great inspiration and delight.”

In general, archeology, ancient science and the development of humanity, was highly praised on this day and praised as interesting. “We are time travelers,” said the director of the collection Gebhard in his opening speech. Minister Blume described the state collection as a place “where you can start a journey.” With the many discoveries that can be made there, “you get a deep sense of what has moved in this country already.”

In view of the full hall at the ceremony, Hermann Parzinger, President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation in Berlin and from Munich, said: “This is the right sign for archaeology.” Bavaria needs a house like the state collection; Munich has long been a “place for prehistoric research”.

Markus Blume then added that the renovated state collection perfectly complements the Munich lifestyle, with its proximity to the Eisbachwelle and the English Garden and “from now on also with a roof terrace of the best” . The bar can be visited there regardless of the museum’s opening hours, says Blume: “That’s an important message for all Aperol fans.”
