Renovated Parkinson Café Dordrecht offers Monthly Meetings and Support for Parkinson’s Patients and their Loved Ones

DORDRECHT – Last Wednesday, Nickie van der Wulp (director of the Parkinson Association), Sven de Langen (director of PZC Dordrecht) and Chris van Benschop (alderman of the Municipality of Dordrecht) festively opened the renovated Parkinson Café Dordrecht. During the well-attended kick-off at the PZC Crabbehoven residential care location, the starting signal was given for a monthly meeting for people with Parkinson(ism) and their loved ones. Music therapist Joop Roovers from PZC Dordrecht provided insight into the value of music therapy for Parkinson’s patients during an interactive demonstration. Nickie van der Wulp shared knowledge about the world of Parkinson’s, while Sven de Langen spoke about the specialized guidance offered by PZC Dordrecht for Parkinson’s patients. In a homely furnished room, the participants enjoyed coffee and pastries from the local bakery while chatting among themselves.

Hans Nyborn, the initiator of Parkinson Café Dordrecht, thanked everyone for the promising collaboration. David Kahle, management assistant at PZC Dordrecht, was pleased with the large turnout and hoped that the café would provide a warm place for Parkinson’s patients to meet each other and talk to professionals on a monthly basis. Councilor Chris van Benschop emphasized the importance of such a meeting place for fellow sufferers and informal caregivers.

Parkinson Café Dordrecht has already drawn up an annual program and will be located in the De Hoeksteen room at the PZC Crabbehoven residential care location in Dordrecht. Each edition includes a speaker and the opportunity for patients to talk informally with each other. Healthcare professionals such as neurologists, occupational therapists and physiotherapists are expected to participate regularly. More information can be found at www.parkinsoncafedordrecht.nl.
