Remembering the Legacy of Volleyball ‘MASTER’ Zdeněk Groessl: A Tribute to a Czech Volleyball Legend

“It is with deep sadness that we have to inform you that the ‘MASTER’ Mr. Zdeněk Groessl has left us,” he wrote Olympus.

A native of Pilsen, nicknamed Patař, in addition to the world gold, he participated with the Czechoslovakian team in two silvers from the European Championship (1967 and 1971). In the jersey of the then Red Star Prague, he became the national champion twice (1966 and 1972). He then remained loyal to Olymp as a men’s coach and Stanislav Mitáč’s assistant for women.

“Volleyball as such is my lifelong destiny,” he said in the medallion of the Czech Volleyball Association two years ago on the centenary of the organization’s founding. “The biggest success was winning the 66th World Championship here in Prague. It was indescribable. We didn’t expect to win it,” he recalled.

In 2017, Groessl received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the union.
