Jorge Bilardo, brother of Carlos Bilardo, world champion coach with Argentina in Mexico 1986, clarified this Tuesday, January 30, that his brother “is fine” and that the positive result of coronavirus was a laboratory error.

Bilardo, 82, admitted to a nursing home for a neurological disease called Hakim-Adams Syndrome, tested positive for coronavirus on Friday and was transferred to a clinic the following day.

Last Sunday, Jorge Bilardo published on his Twitter account that the laboratory had been wrong, but then deleted the message while waiting for a third swab.

This Tuesday, the brother of the world champion again affirmed via Twitter that his brother “is fine” and that the positive diagnosis of coronavirus “was wrong.”

“Being wrong like this is brave. More than a laboratory. But that’s it, they were wrong, it happened. We communicate by phone all night,” Bilardo said in dialogue with the Todo Noticias channel.

Bilardo, who is also a gynecologist, was coach of Albiceleste from 1982 to 1990.

With Diego Maradona as leader of the Argentine team, he won the second World title for Albiceleste in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico when he beat Germany 3-2 in the final.

Four years later, with Bilardo on the bench, Argentina came second in the 1990 World Cup in Italy, losing in the final to Germany 1-0.

Bilardo also coached the teams from Colombia, Guatemala and Libya.

At the club level, he trained Estudiantes in Argentina, where he began and ended his career as a coach; Boca Juniors and San Lorenzo. He also directed the Colombian Deportivo Cali and Sevilla.

In addition, from 2008 to 2014 he served as sports director of the Argentine team.

As a player, ‘the Doctor’ Bilardo was a midfielder for San Lorenzo, Deportivo Español and Estudiantes, where he retired in 1970.
