Canadian musician Robbie Robertson, who led The Band, has died aged 80.
Robertson worked closely with Bob Dylan and the film director Martin Scorsese. Among his most famous songs were “The Weight”, “Up on Cripple Creek” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”.
– Robbie was surrounded by his family when he died, writes Robertson’s manager of 34 years, Jared Levine, in a statement on Wednesday, which is reproduced by the magazine Variety.
He died after a long illness.
The Band was known, among other things, as Bob Dylan’s backing band, but eventually also created a major career on its own. The group had a major influence on American music in the 1960s and 70s, and among other things contributed to Bob Dylan’s transformation from singer to rock star.
Robertson recently completed his fourteenth film score project, which was once again a collaboration with Scorsese.
He was both a guitarist, singer and songwriter and also released several solo albums.
