Sony’s PlayStation 5 Sales Reach 41.7 Million Units, Driving Increase in Gaming Division Revenue

Sony sold 3.3 million PlayStation 5 consoles in the last quarter, which means that a total of 41.7 million units have been sold in the meantime. The number of PlayStation 5 consoles sold increased by almost 38 percent compared to the same period last year.

This is evident from the most recent Sony’s quarterly results. Total gaming hardware revenue increased nearly 42 percent in the first quarter of fiscal 2023, while games and software revenue increased more than 27 percent compared to the same quarter last year. Sales from PS Plus subscribers also increased significantly, but for unknown reasons Sony does not specify how many subscribers the service has. During fiscal year 2022, the number of customers with a PS Plus subscription fluctuated between 45.4 and 47.4 million. Presumably this number has increased slightly.

In total, the gaming division of the Japanese company earned roughly 4.9 billion euros, which is again a sharp increase compared to the same quarter last year. This is partly due to higher PlayStation 5 sales, as well as higher revenue from third-party games. Revenue from first-party games, games from developers that fall under PlayStation Studios, remained the same.

In total, Sony earned almost 18.8 billion euros in the last quarter, an increase of almost a third compared to the same quarter last year. Nevertheless, operating income fell by more than thirty percent to around EUR 1.6 billion. This is partly due to the Financial Services department, where turnover was more than three times as high, but operational income fell by more than 60 percent for unknown reasons.
