Rejecting Rohingya Immigrants: The Situation in Bireuen and Pidie, Aceh

A total of 490 Rohingya immigrants arrived simultaneously in Bireuen and Pidie, Aceh, early this morning. Bireuen residents again rejected the presence of Rohingya refugees.

Reported detikNorth Sumatra, Sunday (19/11/2023), Rohingya immigrants in Bireuen in Gandapura District then scattered to several villages. They arrived on land at around 02.00 WIB and were found in four villages, namely Lhok Mambang, Samuti Rayeuk, Samuti Krueng and Blang Rheu.

Head of Public Relations of the Aceh Regional Police, Commissioner Joko Krisdiyanto, said that the community discovered the whereabouts of the Rohingya at around 02.30 WIB after seeing foreigners walking in groups in the village. Residents reported this to the village head and village officials.

“The village head and local residents gathered the Rohingya immigrants at the football field in Lhok Mambang Village, Meunasah Samuti Rayeuk Village, Meunasah Blang Rheue Village, Meunasah Samuti Krueng,” said Joko to detikSumut.

According to Joko, the people of the four villages rejected the presence of Rohingya. They plan to take the immigrants back to the ship so they can continue their journey out of the sub-district.

“Residents took the Rohingya back to the ship using dump trucks and pickup trucks,” explained Joko.

Meanwhile in Pidie, 241 Rohingya immigrants landed in Kulee Village, Batee Pidie District at around 03.00 WIB. They are currently accommodated in the local village meunasah.

“The information today is that three ships landed, namely in Pidie, Bireuen and Langsa,” said Secretary of Panglima Laot Pidie Marfian.
