Regio: Labor market in December: slight decline – 15,178 men and women in the agency district without work – unemployment rate at 4.0 percent (-0.1)

– At the end of the year, the number of unemployed in the district of the Freiburg Employment Agency fell again slightly. As of the reporting date, a total of 15,178 women and men were unemployed in the city of Freiburg and the districts of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald and Emmendingen, 160 people less than a month earlier. The unemployment rate fell by 0.1 points to 4.0 percent. Youth unemployment is unchanged at 2.5 percent. While unemployment has increased in rural areas due to the weather, the Christmas business in and around Freiburg once again provided some relief.

“For the fourth month in a row we are registering fewer unemployed. Around a third of the corona-related unemployment has now been reduced. Labor demand is also recovering. At the end of the year, that’s good news for the time being, ”says the Chairman of the Management Board of the Freiburg Employment Agency, Andreas Finke. No other agency district in Baden-Württemberg held up so well for the entire year. Once again, the region is demonstrating its stability in the crisis. The fact that the measures to contain the corona pandemic have so far hardly had a negative impact on unemployment is mainly due to short-time working and emergency government aid. Finke expects unemployment to rise sharply in January. However, this will mainly be due to seasonal factors. Finke assumes that the stricter corona rules that have been in force since mid-December will only result in unemployment in a few cases. “With the start of vaccinations, the fight against the pandemic enters a new phase. With entrepreneurial skill, creativity and the help of short-time working, the companies have defied all adversities and stuck to their employees. Now that there is light at the end of the tunnel in the crisis, I do not see that companies will say goodbye to this successful path. That’s why I’m confident about 2021, ”says Finke.

Short-time work
As a result of the tightened measures to contain the corona pandemic, many companies are again reporting short-time work. In December, 722 reports were received for 5,969 people.

In the meantime, the first projections for the short-time work actually used in August 2020 are available for the agency district. According to this, 2,254 companies accounted for short-time work for a total of 18,273 employees. The short-time work rate was 6.8 percent in August after 9.7 percent in July.

Dynamics on the labor market
In the reporting period from November 12 to December 10, 2,774 people registered as unemployed. During the same period, 2,905 people ended their unemployment. The momentum thus fell significantly below that of the previous year.

Structure of the unemployed
Compared to the previous year, the number of unemployed has increased in all target groups. According to legal circles, the following picture emerges: SGB III: 7,744 unemployed (share 51.0 percent), SGB II: 7,434 unemployed (share 49.0 percent).

Labor demand
After a weak November, labor demand has recovered somewhat. The companies reported 1,053 vacancies. That is 86 or 8.9 percent more than in the previous month and 65 or 6.6 percent more than a year ago. The greatest need by industry: Business-related services (244 jobs), including temporary work (210), health and social services (172), professional, scientific and technical services (146), public administration (144), manufacturing (134). In mid-December, the Freiburg Employment Agency had 3,675 orders to fill vacancies.

Development by region
While the Christmas business in the metropolitan areas once again provided relief, unemployment rose, typical for the time of year in rural areas. The increase over the previous year is no longer as high as it was in the summer months. But it remains considerable.

Annual averages 2020
On an annual average in 2020, 15,348 people were registered as unemployed in the district of the Freiburg Employment Agency. That was 2,819 more than in 2019. The unemployment rate for the full year was 4.1 percent after 3.4 percent a year earlier. In total, the companies reported 11,600 vacancies, 3,292 or 22.1 percent fewer than in 2019.
